CGU demands fairer system for fire services funding

Recently CGU lodged a submission to the Victorian Government’s Green Paper – Fire Services and The Non Insured explaining our belief that fire services should be funded through property rates and motor vehicle registrations.

The current funding system is an unfair burden on those with property insurance. CGU's preferred funding option would also more accurately reflect the 15 per cent of MFB callouts and 10 per cent of CFA callouts attributed to motor vehicles.

CGU regularly hears first hand how excessive taxes and charges on insurance impact our customers and, in particular, how the resulting increased premiums can discourage people from taking up full, or in fact any, insurance protection.

Over the coming months we will continue to discuss the need for a fair funding system with the Victorian Government.

Taxation on insurance is an important issue, and for many the impost of the FSL means that appropriate levels of cover become too expensive.

While CGU will be working hard to bring the discussion to the attention of the Victorian Government, you too can make a difference. We encourage you to use this template letter to make contact with your local politicians and media outlets. The letter discusses the impact of taxation on insurance and the importance of effective reform.

To assist in sending your letters, here's a list of all Victorian MPs and their electorate offices.

I've also included for your information, CGU's media release concerning fire services funding and a one-page facts and history of the fire services and funding through insurance products.

All of these documents are also available on the CGU Intermediary Portal.
